Kalgoorlie
North of Esperance, the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is Western Australia's golden heart, a place where fortunes have been won and lost - and where, even today, you can chance your luck at the bush two-up school. Gamblers bet on whether two coins tossed in the air will finish as two heads, two tails or a head and a tail. It's all perfectly legal - and great entertainment.
For contrast, the awesome open-cut Super Pit : 260 metres deep, two kilometres wide and four kilometres long - is the shape of mining today, while Hannans North Tourist Mine offers 100 years of fascinating mining history.
Kalgoorlie's most recent attraction is a museum of the city's infamous but legal "houses of ill repute". The Hay Street building showcases many artefacts of Kalgoorlie's history and has been accepted by locals as a major tourism asset for the city.
