Rockingham

The seaside town of Rockingham, just 40 minutes south of Perth, offers one of Western Australia's most unique natural experiences - swimming with a wild dolphin. Jump aboard the Rockingham Dolphin Cruise boat as it ventures out into the bay and slip into the water with the local wild dolphin pods just off shore. While in the area, visit the Peel and Baldivis Estate wineries, grab a bottle and a picnic lunch and head for the foreshore or grassed park areas.

Boating and yachting are popular along Rockingham's sheltered beaches and nearby Point Peron is good for scuba diving. Take the ferry across to Penguin Island. Cruises around the marine park include a visit to nearby Seal Island, and the chance to see sea lions resting on the beach and dolphins playing in the crystal-clear waters. A discovery centre on Penguin Island allows the public to watch little penguins frolicking in the water and learn how these little diving birds live and behave in the wild. Visitors can also enjoy picnic areas, lookouts, pristine beaches and the beauty of the island itself. Snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming, surfing and exploring the Island's walktrails are other popular pursuits.

Shoalwater Islands Marine Park
Picturesque submerged reefs and shipwrecks abound throughout the Rockingham area. Much of the underwater environment is protected in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Garden Island is a renowned dive site. The Five Fathom Bank is generally clearer than the onshore reefs and richer in marine life. South-west of Penguin Island is Coventry Reef and the wreck of the Carlisle Castle. Here, there are some colossal caves, crammed with soft corals and western blue devil fish.
