Travel and work on east Coast

I'm planning on travelling to Australia in Jan 2004, and am hoping to work to help fund my trip up the east coast. I am a PADI AOW, with loads of diving experience. I also have a degree in Marine Biology and a Masters in Coastal Zone Management. I have spent the last 2 years working as an enviornmental consultant and marine surveyor both in tropical and temperate waters, and am wondering what kind of work I might be able to get - and where do I start. I'm hoping for something diving /marine biology related (obviously), so any suggestions on where to look would be great. Also where are the best places to go, in case I can't get work and just have to dive!

Clare,
I cant help you with finding work however....
Avoidat all costs just heading straight to the GBR for diving .
There is some awsome diving all over. The temperate water diving is fantastic. You will find spots all up and down the NSW and Vic coast. Some loctions in NSW not to be misssed:: South-West Rocks ( a nice little cave dive), Solitary Island Marine Park (dived from Coffs Harbour, Wool). Without doubt one of the best locations is Byron Bay - The Julian Rocks Marine Park. The Abundance and diversity is amazing. Tropical species and temperpate species all mixed together. Lots of large schooling fish, Grey Nurse Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Turtles, Mantas, Lion Fish, Anemone fish, big wrasse, rays.....you name. You name it.
Yes my opinion is a little biased (as I live in Byron!), but there is so much to offer.....apart from diving also!
Other great dives: The Yongala wreck off Townsville.
Exmouth & Coral Bay in WA
Clare if you do end up in Byron Bay....go to Sundive and ask for Jack for any advice.
Happy Diving.
