Snorkelling in Sydney

Hey everyone, I'm looking to compile a little list of shore dives/snorkelling places around Sydney.

I know that some of the beaches are a bit polluted and all, but I've heard that there are some decent places to check out too.

Any suggestions are appreciated by myself, and whoever else reads this thread hoping to get answers!!! Decent directions would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance, Chris Humphries.

P.S. Frazer Park at Lake Munmorah National Park isn't too bad for a snorkel. But that's up on the central coast.

Clovelly at Coogee is great for begineers but I need more places to go!. I live near Cronulla and have heard Shelley Beach is good. Will be going shortly.

Shelley beach/ Oak Park is OK on calm seas.

I would laso recommend Chowder Bay near Mosman, Balmoral baths, Fairlight and on a calm day Freshwater beach off the pool. Worth the drive to the northside for a day.

Hi Chris,

Recently snorkelled Shelley Beach and Cabbage Tree Bay in Manly. Both where excellent. The deeper water in Cabbage Tree was really interesting with lots of Butterfly fish under the rocky ledges and plenty of large fish and even some cuttlefish around.

Also checked out the Shark Nets in Manly (Wharf Side). Some nice seahorses, but about all that was worth seeing there.

Have heard Freshwater, Fairlight and Balmoral are all good, so will try those places sometime soon.

I have a picture collection of some Sydney snorkel sites here: http://www.sydneynature.com/snorkel/fish.html

I hope more will be added later.

I have tried Shelly Beach and we love going there, good to take the kids. Not far away from Shelley is Collins beach (very secluded and you can park and access via a short walk on path and down stairs.... then swim around to Store Beach as well... scouted this spot but not tried yet. Am about to try Clovelly Bay. Another really good spot is Wottamolla Beach and Lagoon (part of the royal national park) in Sydney... Has all facilities needed... a bit of a walk through path in bush but well worth it... lagoon is good for children or novices... the Bay/beach is fairly calm and protected... well worth a try. If you are down south and want a calm family spot, try Molley Mook at the Bogie Hole. I am always on the hunt for a new spot....

Hi, after a long break from snorkelling we took the kids to Shelley beach which was lots of fun and a great place for beginners. A word of warning however: a local lady said that recently they have found 3 blue ringed octopus there, one hiding in a shell. Something to look our for - particularly for the kiddies. Happy snorkelling, Karleen.

Hi guys,

I will visit Sydney 14-Oct to 20-Oct and hope to snorkel. Is it still too cold to hit the water? What are the good spots to go?

Cheers, Chai

Leaving at 6.30 in the morning for two days driving was a tough ask for some. "Where's Paris" was the question. My response was "In France", "No, Where's Paris Knight?", "In France when it's dark!". Some people are just not morning people I was quickly coming to understand.
