Where to explore the Barrier?

Hi guys, I'm a pomme coming over for the cricket next xmas. myself and my girlfriend are PADI advanced with about 50 dives under our belts. We wanted to spend a week explorng the reef as part of the trip and wondered where best to base ourselves. At the moment flying into Brisbane but could easily connect North. Openminded re. shore based or liveaboard. Any great experiences anybody wants to share? Thanks for any advice.

I had a fantastic time on TAKA ex Cairns... Did heaps of dives and having lived in the Whitsundays before, found the sites to be pretty good, mostly undamaged and the staff terrific. There are quite a few dive operators out of Brisbane and when ever I'm home on holidays I go out with REDCLIFFE DIVE CENTRE. redcliffedive@bigblue.net.au - Phone 07 3283 1177 - Yvonne is great and very friendly and they can usually get what ever gear you want from where ever. They've helped me out heaps! I believe they can get access to a new site off the coast - HMAS Brisbane - which very few operators can. I haven't personally been there but it's supposed to be a well worth while dive. A few hours north of Brisbane has tons of dive sites and most are fairly well kept secrets so there's little in the way of crowding and the reef/sites are all well looked after. michelle@diveadventures.com.au This travel agent might be able to steer you in a good direction too - I found her to be most helpful planning my trips. And she came recommended to me by my NT/Darwin dive shop also. Personally I'd strongly recommend diving Darwin - I love wreck diving so that's just a personal recommendation! Good luck! You'll love it no matter where you go!
