Nikonos versus Digital

Hi everyone, I'd like to buy an underwater camera to take semi-professional photos of people in a pool setting. I'm prepared to spend up to $3000 if I need to, but I can't decide if I should go with the old Nikonos V or a nice digital SLR with housing. I need great clarity in the photos. Is is easy to drown your camera with a housing? Does the Nikonos really gives the best clarity? I would appreciate any comments/ ideas/ suggestions. Thanks a lot

Hi Sylvia,

I suggest that you should go with the digital slr. You'll get everythings in control with a digital slr and doesn't have to worry about spending money for film anymore. You could just review your shots on site and just take another one if you made some mistakes with the last one.

Today, you could get a good and cheap DSLR camera almost anywhere, I suggest you get a new or 2nd hand Nikon D70s (less than A$1100 plus kit lens), and go to http://www.digitaldiver.com.au and get the iKelite housing for the camera and port on the 2nd hand section for less than A$2000. You have to remember that shooting underwater gonna need some flash or strobes. Yet, today, if you only shoot pictures on a pool setting, 1-6 meters, you could just use the magic filter, a special filter use to correct the white balance on your camera. Therefore, you could save some money by not buying the more expensives strobes.

Hope this will help you. ^_^

Cheers,

Luke
