Aussie physical exam

I'm a newbie to diving and I need to be open water certified (SSI) in Australia. My local dive shop tells me I will have to under go a Australian physical exam. Any truth to that?

what is involved in the physical exam?

Also, anyone know of any place in melbourne where they can do the open water dives?

thanks

Hi Eric,

Yes, you have to have a dive medical to do a dive course in Australia. In many dive shops that gets arranged for you as part of your course and is often charged extra.

The exam is mainly a lung volume test (check for asthma), a look into your ears (problem with your ear drums) and a test for diabetis (you will need to leave some urine).

As for your second part of your question - you mean are there shore dives in Melboure ... well there sure are plenty. Talk to your local dive shop.

Hope that helps, see you underwater ...

Tim

When you dive on a shipwreck, jetty or pier do you consider it a nature-based experience? This is one of the major questions I am seeking to address in my PhD thesis at the University of Newcastle, which looks at the use of artificial reefs as resources for recreational scuba diving.
